Urgency

'Time and tide wait for no man.' A sense of urgency should characterize the way we do things in our college. We should all develop a passion for what we are doing and constantly have in us the zest for being virtually involved in the work of our department or the organisation as a whole and getting things done promptly, efficiently, effectively, and at the very least, in the nick-of-time (or just-in-time).

Our managers and staff should be adept at time management and be competent at prioritising their work and activities. They should obviously have a strong sense of commitment to the school and be willing to sacrifice some of their leisure time to complete their tasks and discharge their responsibilities to the organisation. The survival, development and growth of our organisation would depend greatly on the concerted efforts of all our staff and the passion to achieve our corporate mission despite the constraints of time or resources we have available to us to do the job.

Positive-Thinking

This is the mindset of thinking positively. It reflects the desire to be successful in all that we can do. It is aspiring and dreaming for the things we hold dear and consider important in our lives and our vocation, and turning our hopes and dreams into reality. We also need to be sensitive to other people on our team and can be responsible towards them. Effective teamwork is the key to success for the organization. We have privileges, but also obligations, being on our 'Dream-Team'. If we work diligently and harmoniously together, there is happiness and synergy in what we do, and the sky is the limit on what we can achieve together.

Trust

We would like all our managers and staff to be enterprising in their approach to their work and also in their relationships with those they interact with in their work. We work very much on the basis of mutual trust in one another, that we would be considering foremost, the interest of the organisation and put in our best efforts in everything that we do.

We should be considering ourselves as part-owners of the department or work processes we are involved in and be willing to go 'the extra mile' in meeting the needs and requirements of our customers or even to surprise or delight them.

We also need to adopt a longer-term view of the work or business we are in and have a very good understanding of the product or service we are extending to the customer. We also need to possess sufficient knowledge and skills to deliver the product or service satisfactorily and competently to the customer. This means that we also need to have a very clear idea of who the customer is, and what his preferences and needs are.

In other words, we need to know very well the type of business we are in and also the type of things we are able to do well. In effect, we are the 'stakeholders' of the work processes we are performing and the work unit we are belonging to. We would be successful in this 'enterprise' if our talents and abilities are matched perfectly with the demands and preferences of the customer or client.

Respect

A basic shared value we would like everyone to have at the college would be respect. We need to have respect for one another if we are to be able to work together as a team. This mutual respect is built upon the self-esteem and self-confidence we first have in ourselves.

Respect means thinking well of the other person. It is the belief that the person we are dealing with is well-qualified and is capable of fulfilling the responsibilities and duties expected of him or her. Thus, a manager views his staff as a co-worker, and sincere supporter of the work in the department. The staff would also be looking up to his superior as a mentor, a helper and controller in the work and operations of the department. The mutual trust and respect between a supervisor and a staff is usually established over a period of time. The parties concerned would have found each other to be serious, responsible, cooperative and supportive in their joint efforts to accomplish the work that is to be done in their department or section of the organisation.

The teachers and students of the college, similarly, would have developed a sense of trust, respect, friendship, consideration and mutual concern for one another, having been in the same class for a period of time.

Finally, we also need to have respect for the supervisory authorities, like the MOE, CPE and ICA and the members of the public at large. We need to abide by the rules and guidelines established by the governing agencies and observe the social and cultural norms and practices in the local or global environment in which we are functioning. Only then, can we be successful in achieving viability, stability and harmony in our immediate and the larger business environment.

Excellence

'Excellence' refers to the highest standard of behaviour, attitudes, performance, customer service, and satisfaction of all the stakeholders in the organisation. It reflects the quality culture that is to pervade and characterise our college.

Novelty

Everyone is encouraged to be resourceful and imaginative at work. We should constantly be improving on what we are currently doing and thinking of how we can be adding value to our customers, both internal and external, all the time. Innovations, continuous improvement, increases in productivity and improvement of quality should be our daily concerns.

Diligence

We also need to work diligently to achieve our goals and objectives. We would need to be resilient when we encounter difficult situations or problems in our work. If we persevere in our jobs, we would be able to overcome setbacks and be successful in the long-run. We would encourage our managers and staff to be flexible in their approaches to the performance of their work or duties and constantly adapt to the changes in the conditions and demands of their jobs. They should seek help or advise from their superiors or colleagues where necessary and should find their work challenging, meaningful and rewarding if they are willing to press on and also lend a helping hand to others in their jobs and careers.

Our shared values (UPTREND) thus spell out very clearly what we hold dear in the college. They also form the basis of a corporate culture that we all share in the organisation. It is the all-embracing philosophy or mindset that guides all our thinking, behaviour and actions as we go about doing our daily work in the college.

The shared values thus constitute the value-system which underpins the entire quality culture or flavour of the college where each staff is a valued member of the entire team and everyone is pressing on to achieve excellence for the organisation.

The acronym 'UPTREND', meaning 'Using Positive-Thinking to Realise Every New Dream,' characterises very much the mind-set or aspiration of everyone at our college. 'Positive-Thinking' means 'optimism', but goes a long way beyond mere wishful thinking. We try to put it in practice what we, as individuals, groups or a corporate entity believe in, in everything we do, i.e. the 'can do' and 'can be' mindset. A culture is basically a way of life and so the 'Uptrend' culture would essentially be 'the way we do things around here'.
